The implementation of industrial production of polycaprolactam and the great success of the IUPAC International Symposium on Macromolecules (which occurred in Prague in 1957) helped to found the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry within the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1959. The first director of the Institute was Prof. Otto Wichterle, who established and developed the Institute and was the most important architect of its achievements. On the occasion of the anniversary, we enclose a supplement about the Institute building, which was constructed from 1960–1964 and which accommodated all Institute departments. It was the first building of its type in then Czechoslovakia. The building was added into a list of cultural monuments in 2000.
