SCIENCE AND RESEARCH

Future leaders in European science policy and research
The European Science Foundation (ESF) organized a seminar on the topic Science policy in Strasbourg held in January 2009. The ESF, as the only organization in Europe that brings together major research organizations, plays a distinctive role in the implementation of the European Research Area. Science policy activities are aimed at creating an environment which is conducive to high level research in Europe and developing an authoritative vision for scientific fields, research areas and needed research infrastructures.

Tokamak Compass
The official inauguration of Tokamak COMPASS took place in Prague on February 19, 2009. On this occasion, a 100 kA plasma electric current was experimentally achieved. This event was attended by the head of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, guests from EURATOM, media and via video-conference from the U.K. a British team from Culham Science Centre, which donated COMPASS to IPP Prague. The research is focused on problems related to the long-term worldwide effort leading to the achievement of thermonuclear fusion, which represents an inexhaustible and ecologically acceptable future source of energy for society.
