TOPIC OF THE MONTH

Publicity of Science in Great Britain
The publicity of science in Great Britain has had a long tradition, but now struggling with other problems, such as scientific questions having a massive impact on the public, including the BSE ("Mad Cow Disease"), cloning, genetically modified food, and nuclear energy. The Ministry of Industry and Trade was re-named the Office for Science and Technology that supports applied research. The Royal Society grounded the Committee on the Public Understanding of Science in 1986 to formulate a strategy of presenting science to the public, and also to finance prestige literary awards to those who popularise science for adults, children and youth.

SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES

Linguistic Association of the Czech Republic
The Linguistic Association of the Czech Republic was established by the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences on 4. 9. 1956, and after 1989 it collaborated with the renewed Prague linguistic circle. Both associations cooperate in many projects.

NEWS FROM THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL - 20TH ASSEMBLY OF THE ASCR ON APRIL 24TH, 2002

Professor Helena Illnerová,
President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, reported on the activities of Academic Council of the ASCR since the 19th Assembly of the ASCR. She also expressed her views on several significant topics such as communication and collaboration inside particular workplaces also in applied research in the user sphere. Noting the possibility of the evolution of human potential for particular branches, she recommended moving into programs of the EU, organising and promoting science and how to support young scientists.

Doctor Antonín Kostlán,
historian of science, presented an address concerning the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.

AWARDS

During the 5th ceremony of the magazine ŽIVA, the Purkyně Award was presented to Dr. Juraj Holčík, an ichtyologist from the Institute of Zoology, Slovakia
A special award by ŽIVA was given to immunologists Dr. Petr Šíma and Dr. Ilja Trebichovský from the Institute of Imunology, ASCR
The ŽIVA Award was presented to Magister Milan Řezáč, a graduate of the Natural Sciences Faculty of Charles University
The Antonín Frič Award was given to Dr. Petr Šíma and Dr. Ilja Trebichovský for their serial "Healing Substances from Animal Kingdom"

Blue Planet
As honorary guest Docent Prof. Helena Illnerova introduced a festive presentation of the book and BBC TV programme the Blue Planet focusing on nature.

Matija Murko - Personality and Work
The Slavonic Institute ASCR on the occasion of the international symposium recalled 50th anniversary of the death of Prof. Matija Murko, second head of Slavonic Institute and the first professor and head of section on South Slavonic languages and literature at Charles University (10. 2. 1861-10. 2. 1952)

A portrait of the Czech historian, whose analysis of monographs about the town of Olomouc presents a significant interpretation of especially complicated suburban resident deposits.

PORTRAITS FROM THE ARCHIVES

Karel Absolon
Noting the 125th anniversary of his birth (16. 6. 1877 - 6. 10. 1960). Karel Absolon as a doctor of zoology, palaeontology, speleology, geography, archaeology, and philosophy, at first concentrated on problems of the Moravian and Dinar Karst. He discovered Punkva Cave. He is also known for discovering the diluvial statue of Věstonická Venuše, installed in his famous exhibition "Anthropos" on the Brno exhibition ground.
