the wonders of the Universe with the public. The official Opening Ceremony for the IYA 2009 began January 15, 2009 and continued for over two days in Paris. Events were accessible to all via live webcast. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe.

Scientific experts debated a new X-ray telescope at Vila Lanna. The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is a new X-ray telescope with joint participation from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
