Astronomers from around the world gathered in Paris for the start of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA 2009), the largest event for sharing
the wonders of the Universe with the public. The official Opening Ceremony for the IYA 2009 began January 15, 2009 and continued for over two days in Paris. Events were accessible to all via live webcast. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe.
