Archaeological research continues in areas of the Basilica of St. Lawrence at Vyšehrad. The century pre-Romanesque edifice may have been the largest in Prague. The space of the Basilica in the southern part of Vyšehrad, examined over the past decades, is the focus of archaeologists at the Institute of Archaeology. The attention of archaeologists has been focused mainly on previous structures at that site, remnants of which were first investigated in the 1930s, but only partially. During research of Vyšehrad monuments, archaeologists have revised the research project in 2011. The existence of an earlier building preserved only in its foundations was confirmed this year.
The Basilica of St. Lawrence is comparable in size to the episcopal rotunda of St Vitus and St Wenceslas at Prague Castle. It was constructed on a ground plan uncommon for Bohemia at that time – a square with three apses (a so-called triconch). Archaeologists date its construction as the 2nd half of the 10th century to the 1st half of the 11th century.
