František Weyr - 50^th Anniversary of His Death

Philosopher, lawyer and expert in statistics František Weyr was born in 1879.

He spent his young life partly as an administration employee working for state in Vienna and partly as a university professor in Prague. After World War I he was very active in political issues and he helped to establish new rules in economy, law and education of the new Czech Republic. Among other things he founded the 2^nd university in the Czech lands, the Masaryk University in Brno, and later on he became its chancellor. Weyr is author of about 30 books (his major topic was philosophy of law) and of tons of articles for newspapers.

Czech Demographic Society

The Czech Demographic Society was founded in 1964. It is a voluntary organization of scientists, pedagogues and other specia-lists doing research in the field of demography and related disciplines. Demography is a science studying human population and its structure in quantity and quality. The Czech Demographic Society counts 350 members all over the country, including specialists in geography, economy, statistics, history and sociology.

Structure and Interactions of Nuclear and Subnuclear Elements

The project Structure and Interactions of Nuclear and Subnuclear Elements was part of the research at the Institutions of Nuclear Physics of ASCR and the Institute of Physics of ASCR in 1996 - 2000. It was focused on description and interactions of atomic nuclei and basic elements.

USA - Czech Republic Regional Workshop on the Plant Hormone Cytokinin

The workshop was organized by the Institute of Experimental Botany of ASCR in co-operation with the Oregon State University, Corvallis, USA, as a part of the 17^th International Conference on Plant Growth Substances in Brno. The workshop was devoted to the natural plant hormones called cytokinins.

Is Globalization Overpowering Democracy?

The Institute of Landscape Ecology of ASCR held the conference "Is Globalization Overpowering Democracy?

The Challenge for Ecology, Economy and Culture" in Prague on June 12 - 16, 2001. The theme of the conference was the relationship between globalization and democracy, in particular the issues of democracy that are emerging under contemporary globalization trends. The conceptual framework of the conference was based on the assumption that concerns about globalization are often connected with anxieties related to the loss of control over various life dimensions and to the social, cultural, economic and political consequences of globalization.

Interview with psychologist Professor Zdeněk Matějček, Gesell Price holder in 2000, whose life work has been devoted to the psychical deprivations of people, especially children. Even within the period of the totalitarian regime, the results of his research influenced the attitude of Czech society to the role of the family and congregated education in the process of training and instruction in former Czechoslovakia.
