Josef Macůrek

Professor Josef Macůrek, well-known historian and student of Professor Jaroslav Bidlo, devoted his life to the history of the Slavic nations. He disagreed with the once widely-held concept that all Slavic nations had a common history, and he pointed to the importance of the influence of other ethnic groups on the Slavic people.

Max Planck Society Seeks New Opportunities of Collaboration

In January an official delegation of the Max Planck Society - Professor Klaus Hahlbrock, Vice-President and the director of the MP Institute for Plant Breeding Research, and Professor Konstantin A. Hossmann, director of the MP Institute for Neurological Research, visited several scientific institutes in the Czech Republic to discuss possibilities for further co-operation. Academic Bulletin interviewed the German scientists for their impressions.

Graduation Ceremony of Academic Scholars

The graduation ceremony of scholars who obtained their CSc. (equivalent to Ph.D.) and DrSc. (equivalent to D.Sc.) degrees was held on February 20, 2001.

Czech Astronomical Society

The Czech Astronomical Society has about 500 members - scientists, amateurs, astronomers working at public observatories and students. Its branches organize regular meetings of their members with the general public, publish special magazines and issue press releases about new discoveries in Astronomy and important astronomical events (like eclipses of the Sun or the Moon, the appearance of meteors and comets etc.).

ESDAR 2000

On November 23, 2000 European Society for Domestic Animal Reproduction organized its fourth annual conference in the Hotel Crystal Congress Center in Prague. The participants focused on some actual topics in animal reproduction such as: trends in mammalian oocyte maturation in vitro and transmissible virus diseases in reproduction.

Czech Ethnology 2000

The Institute of Ethnology of the ASCR hosted a conference titled Czech Ethnology 2000 at Villa Lanna in Prague on October 25 - 26, 2000.

Czech Students in India

An interview with Marián Grocký, a student of the Christian Doppler Grammar School in Prague and member of a team of young Czech physicists, which took part in a prestigious international competition called Quanta 2000 in India.

Will We Yet See the Stars on the Night Sky?

Light smog in big cities makes it impossible for many people to observe the night sky in its full beauty. Astronomers think society should do something about this shameful situation and protect this fortune of nature for future generations. They presented their views during a press conference on January 24, 2000.

Science or Else? There Is No Other Way for Progress but Science!

The third colloquium Science or Else? was held in Vila Lanna in Prague on January 19 - 21, 2001. The meeting of Czech and Swiss scientists this year gave attention to the role of scientists in information transfer and problems involved in the process of communication to media. The article reports on the second day that was devoted to discussion with journalists. Representatives of six Prague media were present for parts of the colloquium.

Grant Agency of the Czech Republic Introduced Its New Leaders

At a press conference organized by the Department of Public Relations of the ASCR on February 20, 2001 the new President of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic professor Josef Syka and the members of its board were introduced to media. They described the grant system of distributing finances and their plans for future.

The Ambassador of the Holy See to the Czech Republic Giovanni Coppa was awarded the Honor Medal De Scientia Et Humanitate Optime Meritis on February 7, 2001.

Professor Armando Luches was awarded the Ernst Mach Honor Medal on February 2, 2001.
