Václav Chaloupecký - 50th Anniversary of his Death

Václav Chaloupecký, Czech historian and archivist, was born in 1882. He graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University; where his major study was historiography. Most of his life he spent in Slovakia and devoted his scientific erudition to research in Slovak archives. Within time he became an authority in Czech-Slovak political relations. In 1938 was elected a regular member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Art.

Antonín Bečvář - the Astronomer Who Loved Clouds

Antonín Bečvář, world famous astronomer, studied climate and astronomy at Charles University. In 1927 he built a little observatory in his family garden and started observations of the night sky. In 1930 he moved to Slovakia to continue his work in High Tatras. His observatory at Skalnaté pleso, founded in 1941, was one of the highest in Europe. Here Bečvář wrote his famous works - atlases of the stars (Atlas of the Heavens, later completed with his trilogy: Eclipticalis, Borealis, Australis) and Atlas of Mountain Clouds.

UNESCO Program Man and the Biosphere and the Biosphere Reservations

The program Man and the Biosphere is one of the international projects sponsored by the Department of Ecological Studies of UNESCO. The project is focused on the environment, relations between the man and nature, biosphere reservations and preservation of diversity. The Czech Republic has been participating in the project since 1970 when the Czech National Committee of MAB was established.

In May the Council for the Popularization of Science of the ASCR presented a very interesting series of lectures concerning a current topic, the importance of math in education. Geometry as an important part of mathematics is considered to be the basis for all other sciences and has influenced the general thinking of mankind throughout the development of human civilization.

A Man of Strong Vision - Konrad Adenauer

On May 23, 2001 the Institute of Contemporary Science of the ASCR and Konrad-Adenauer-Stifting jointly hosted a colloquium to celebrate the 125th anniversary of birth of the eminent German politician Konrad Adenauer, founder of a modern democratic state, the Federal Republic of Germany.
