František Ladislav Čelakovský
Observing the 200th Anniversary of His Birth
F. L. Čelakovský is well-known name in the history of Czech literature and journalism. He is the author of such popular classical work as Ohlas písní ruských (Echo of Russian Songs, 1829), Ohlas písní českých (Echo of Czech Songs, 1839), Růže stolistá (One Hundred Leafs Rose, 1840) and Mudrosloví národa slovanského v příslovích (Wisdom of the Slavic Nation in Proverbs, 1851). His works have become a permanent and important part of school textbooks and anthologies for Czech students for more than a hundred years.
Numerous meetings, exhibitions and other events took place in honour of the bi-centenary of his birth. Among them the conference called Růže stolistá was one of the most important. On September 27th to 30th 1999, the Institute of Sociology of the ASCR, the German Sociological Society - Section for East and Middle-East Europe, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Prague and Foundation THYSSEN in Germany co-sponsored the International Czech-German Conference on European Integration and Extension of the European Union to the East. border co-operation;
the role of the social sciences in the process of European integration.

The Academic Bulletin interviewed representatives of the organising institutions, Professor Ilja Šrubař from University of Erlangen in Germany and Assistant Professor Miloš Havelka from the Institute of Sociology of the ASCR.

Introducing the Institutes

The Institute of Philosophy of the ASCR
We would like to inform you that the concept or rationale of this column has been radically changed. While AB editors sought to present detailed reports of institutes' work, we obviously do not have enough space to do so. The challenge is to examine in depth the specific work of some teams, the most successful scientists and the most significant projects.
This issue introduces the Institute of Philosophy and its two working groups: logic and analytic philosophy. Both teams are known for organising consequential international conferences.

Interview

French Opéra Comique in Prague
In May 1999 the Institute of Musicology of the ASCR in co-operation with Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater Universität Bayreuth (Research Institute for Music Theatre of the University of Bayreuth) in Thurnau in Germany and the Institute of Musicology of the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University under the patronage of the French Institute of Prague organised an international symposium of musicology called "French Opéra Comique and its Influence in Europe in 19th Century." Academic Bulletin briefly described the symposium in the 6th issue. Based on reactions of foreign participants, the organisers did a great job and the event was highly appreciated. Academic Bulletin interviewed Dr. Milan Pospíšil, main organiser of the symposium.
