An International conference involving life sciences and philosophy, Knowledge, Value, Evolution, was held in Prague on November 23–25, 2009. Invited speakers from abroad and other scientists discussed key topics: traditions of evolutionary epistemology, evolutionary explanations of mind, language and consciousness, the evolutionary origins of morality and the concept of human nature, Darwin’s place in philosophy, reduction and emergence in biological sciences.
The Universe: Yours to Discover
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 was a global effort launched by the International Astro-nomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe. IYA2009 marked the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s first astronomical observation through a telescope in 1609, an event that changed the world forever. IYA2009 has shown astronomy as a global scientific endeavor that unites astronomers to an international family of scientists working together to find answers to fundamental questions that humankind has always asked. IYA2009 was brought to an official close with a ceremony in Padova, Italy.
Manifesto for creativity and innovation in Europe
This document was one of the key results of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 and it is the collective work of the Ambassadors of the Year that is, leading European personalities from the fields of culture, science, business, education and design. The Ambassadors handed the Manifesto to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso on November 12, 2009 in Brussels. Through seven priorities and seven proclamations of action, the Manifesto is a force for change.
