Institute of Slavonic Studies makes its ‘debut’ in Moscow

The Institute of Slavonic Studies acquainted the general Russian academic and cultural public with its work in the new building of the prestigious institute Fond-Biblioteka Russkoje zarubežje, situated in the centre of Moscow.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH
Bioinformatics and Forensic Genetics

The scientific field of genetics is distributed not only throughout basic research but is expected to apply also in practice. Scientists and criminologists discussed applied research of that branch at a seminar at Villa Lanna 29th March 2006.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
GMO plants at the center of attention

ASCR in cooperation with BIOTRIN, a non-profit organization formed by the academic community to disseminate information on modern biotechnology, organized a conference on the 10th anniversary of GMO. The experts agreed that European regulation of GMO is more a policy than a science matter.

Accident of communism
The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic together with The State Office for Nuclear Safety commemorated the 20th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear accident at the Chernobyl power plant at a seminar titled Twenty years after the Chernobyl accident. The horrendous accident happened early in the morning of 26th April 1986 when a reactor exploded after a reckless safety experiment went terribly wrong.

EDUCATION
The new president of the University of Economics in Prague

Interview with the Prof. Richard Hindls, president of the University of Economics in Prague who describes the leading university in the field of management and economics in the Czech Republic. The university is composed of 15,500 students who are served by more than 650 academic staff as well as about 500 non-academic staff. Sixty-one percent of VŠE professors have doctoral degrees in their field.

BRUSSELS
European program for RTD

The creation of multi-annual RTD funding schemes is already provided for by the Treaty establishing the European Community in 1965. EU’s primary vehicle for research funding is Framework Programs. They have been operating since 1984. The 6th is the, largest so far, being worth 17.5 billion EUR. It became operational in January 2003 and will conclude in December 2006. It covers seven vertical thematic priorities plus a number which are horizontal. Separate funding is available to nuclear research and other European and non-European projects.
