EVENT OF THE MONTH
Mass Spectrometry Specialists in the Heart of Europe
From August 27 to September 1, 2006 The 17th International Mass Spectrometry Conference took place in Prague. The IMSC is the largest international conference on mass spectrometry and it attracted nearly two thousand participants.
The mass spectrometric method is enjoying the largest surge in its 100-year history. The past decades have seen exciting new developments: from methods that led to the discovery of stable isotopes of elements, to numerous applications for the analysis of gaseous mixtures and solid materials, to the elucidation of the structures of organic molecules, and to the development of ion chemistry in the gaseous phase.
SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
100th Anniversary of Observations at Ondřejov Astronomical Observatory
In 1898, a private observatory was built by J. J. Fric in a small village called Ondrejov, located 35 km (20 miles) southeast of Prague and the first astronomical observation was executed there in 1906. This small observatory was donated to the state Czechoslovakia represented by Charles University in Prague in 1928. Now it is the estate of The Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The site of the Ondrejov Observatory, at an elevation of 500 m in the relatively unpolluted environs of Prague, proved to be very well chosen.
Breath Analysis in Physiology and Medicine
On the September 4–5, the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry was host to an international interdisciplinary conference that gathered physicists and chemists as well as analyzing-apparatus producers from the 17 countries.
The subject of breath analysis in physiology and medicine has matured during the last two years or so and thus it is amenable to discussion and exchange of views and ideas through a series of specialized, focused workshops rather than the normal format of review and contributed papers. INTRODUCING PROJECTS
Chronobiology School and Exploring Czech Beauties in Třešť
University pre- and post-graduate students studied the "biological clock” at the Třešť Country House in summer, under the integrated project EUCLOCK (6th Framework Programme). The international event was sponsored by the Institute of Physiology. The beautiful Třešť countryside afforded relaxation for the students during their free time.
SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES
Czech Immunology Society
The Czech Immunology Society is a member of the International Union of the Immunological Societies and the European Federation of Immunological Societies. It was established in 1986 and covers a broad range of activities, and since its foundation has co-organized several international conferences.
