EVENT OF THE MONTH
Open House or, "Science and Technology Week 2004"

The Week, organized by the Academy of Sciences and its partners in early November, attracted over 1,000 visitors, primarily secondary school students, to the main building of the Academy on Národní Street in Prague. They came to take part in lectures, roundtable discussions and an interactive programme presented by the British Council entitled "RoverBot Challenge". Hundreds of other students visited individual institutes of the Academy of Sciences, which also opened their doors to the public.

The Ways of Science in Czech Republic

With Prof. Václav Hořejší, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the ASCR, who talks about science, science policy and about ways to improve science in the Czech Republic.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
Diplomas to Doctors of Sciences

The scientific degree Doctor of Sciences – D.Sc. – has been re-established. A ceremony at which the first eight new Doctors of Sciences were handed their diploma took place in the Library of the ASCR in November.

Temelín and Environment
The Temelín Nuclear Power Station is still an important issue for many people in the Czech Republic and in particular its neighbouring countries. A conference titled Evaluation of the influence of Temelín Nuclear Power Station to environment dealt with monitoring programmes at the Temelín station, which closely watch eventual influences to environment. New Computing Centre A new regional computing centre with 80 blade servers in 18 racks having a disk capacity over 40 TB was opened at the Institute of Physics of the ASCR.

SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES
Czech Anatomical Society

The Czech Anatomical Society was established in 1993 as a successor to the Czechoslovak Anatomical Society for the territory of the Czech Republic. The Czechoslovak Anatomical Society was founded in 1950, when it was separated from the Czechoslovak Biological Society, whose roots went back to the time when J. E. Purkyně taught at Charles University in Prague (1850 to 1869). The Czech Anatomical Society is active not only in field of morphology as a science, but also with teaching it and as clinical medicine.

Jaroslav Ludvíkovský (1895–1984)

Twenty years passed since the death of notable classical philologist Jaroslav Ludvíkovský, considered to be the initiator of research in the field of the Czech and Slovak Latin Mediaeval literature.

CULTURE AND THE SOCIETY
Christmas 2004 or Madonna on the Lion

Klosterneuburg Madonna or Madonna on the Lion, a sculpture from the 14th century, is back in Prague. It will be exhibited at the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia starting in December 2004.

Complicated way to freedom
According to the tradition of American presidents the Library of Václav Havel was established in Prague this past summer.
