SUMMARY

TOPIC OF THE MONTH
The Institute of Physiology, ASCR, celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

It was founded on January 1, 1954, as the first independent workplace of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. They concentrated on the basic physiological research as neuroscience, developmental physiology and patophysiology. Later the structure of the Institute was radically altered due to problems related to study of adaptation of animal organism to environmental changes. Nowadays the Institute is consisted of 19 scientific laboratories.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
European Convention on Life Sciences & Biotechnology

Ecological Impact of genetically Modified Organisms
The Institute of Entomology, ASCR, in conjunction with The Research Institute of Plant Production and Faculty of Science of Charles University arranged the Conference Ecological Impact of genetically Modified Organisms held from November 26 to 29, 2003. In Prague over one hundred European Researchers this problematic thrashed out this question and also the environmental problems related to the Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants.

Descartes Award
A special Descartes Award was given to the team of scientists from 9 countries in November 2003. Also Czech scientists from Astronomical Institute, ASCR, took part in the awarded project European Satellite Navigation Galileo.

Science in Exile
In November 2003 The Research Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities organized an international and interdisciplinary focused seminar Science in Exile at the opportunity of the 70th Anniversary of a big exile wave of German intelligence into the Czechoslovakia. The Programme was draft like a part of the huge cycle Czech and German exile 1939–1989, supported financially by The Czech-German Fund for the Future.

Game, Science and Philosophy
This is a title used by Department of Analytic Philosophy of The Institute of Philosophy, ASCR, for organization of a multi-branch seminar held on November 4 and 5, 2003. The main goal was to demonstrate the position of Game in the contemporary science.

PORTRAITS FROM THE ARCHIVES
First Czech in the Antarctic 75 years ago

Dr. Václav Vojtěch (1901–1932) was the first Czech who visited the Antarctica as a member of a polar expedition of the American admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888–1957) in January 27, 1929. After his return to USA from the Antarctica he was awarded the Golden Medal of Congress of the USA in 1930.

Czech Plato Society

The main goal of The Czech Plato Society is to support the study of Plato’s Philosophy in research, pedagogy, translation and publication. The Society began to organise Czech or also international conferences periodically where important foreign and Czech scientists and students take part. For the year 2004 was chosen Plato’s dialog Charmides and for 2005 dialog Symposion.

EDUCATION
Cooperation with the Czech Radio

On November 21, 2003, the Evaluation of the best works in Czech history of the senior students of the Radio Academy of the Third Age organised by the Czech Radio-Praha.

CULTURE AND SOCIETY
Artificial Intelligence 4

This book was published under the auspices of the president of ASCR Helena Illnerová and the dean of FEL, ČVUT, Vladimír Kučera. His Excellence Juan Eduardo Fleming, Ambassador of the Republic of Argentina in the Czech Republic, held a speech about the cultural project Golem.

Language in a Structural Approach:
On October 29, 2003, The Institute of Slavonic Studies, ASCR, in cooperation with the Slavonic Library organised a presentation of Oldřich Leška’s book The Language in a Structural Approach: Chapters from a Synchronous and Diachronous Analysis of Russian.
