Jindřich Šebánek
Jindřich Šebánek, professor of special historical disciplines on Masaryk University in Brno, was born October 12th, 1900, in Písek. In 1918 after he had graduated from grammar school he began his studies at Charles University's Philosophical Faculty. His major was history and geography. From 1920 - 1923 he also completed additional studies at State School for Archivists.

Czech Polar Expedition Is on Its Way to Antarctica
After few successful extended visits of Czech scientists to foreign Antarctic stations, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is supporting an independent project of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno called Ecology of Coastal Antarctic Oasis. The first official Czech polar station will be built next year.

The Science and the Invisible Dog
Writer and journalist Ondřej Neff is the best known writer of Czech science fiction, and the author of many novels and story books. At the beginning of the '90`s he founded the monthly for sci-fi Ikarie. Within the last four years he has been publisher and editor in chief of the most popular online e-zine, Invisible Dog.

Awards

Dr. František J. Holeček and Dr. Werner Korthaase received the Jan Patočka Medal, official award of the ASCR.

Introducing the Institutes

Optical Development Laboratory
Optical Development Laboratory is located in Turnov, a town with over 100 years tradition of optical production. ODL was founded as a part of the ASCR in the early '60`s responding to a need to produce unique optical components for the project Interkosmos.

Obituary

Dr. Svetozár Pantůček, an expert for Orient studies and former editor in chief of Academic Bulletin and the magazine New Orient, has died.
