RESUME

The highlight of this issue is the address by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Professor Alejo Vidal Quadras, which he presented at the 16th Assembly of the ASCR on April 27th, 2000.
Professor Quadras focused his attention on creating a European civil society.

Professor Rudolf Zahradník, President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, reported on the activities of Academic Council of the ASCR since the 15th Assembly. He also expressed his views about life in the academic society, science and ethics, organising and promoting science. He underscored the importance of responsible selection of candidates for the next election for Academic Council.

Genomics - the base for the medicine of the future
Professor Václav Pačes, director of the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the ASCR, lectured on the perspectives of the newly established biological field, genomics. Research in genetic information brings us complete understanding of full hereditary information "written" in our "genus fund", he said.

Discussion orations
These discourses were followed by wide-ranging discussion in which the 16 members of the Assembly took part.
The most important contribution was by Professor Martin Potůček, the First Vice-President of the Research and Development Council of the Government of the Czech Republic. His oration was followed by the spirited comments of other participants.
